Energy Storage for Communities & Local Governments
NYSERDA provides resources and technical assistance to communities and local governments to help make informed decisions when managing local energy storage development.
Energy Storage Guidebook
The Energy Storage Guidebook provides information, tools, and step-by-step instructions to support local governments across the State who are managing battery energy storage system development in their communities. The Guidebook provides local officials in-depth details about the permitting and inspection process to ensure efficiency, transparency, and safety in their communities.
You can download the full Energy Storage Guidebook [PDF] as a PDF or access individual chapters.
Energy Storage Regulation and Safety
Energy storage is essential for creating a cleaner, more efficient, and resilient electric grid. Thousands of storage systems have been deployed statewide, including residential, commercial, and bulk systems.
Energy storage technologies and systems are regulated at the federal, state, and local levels, and must undergo rigorous safety testing to be authorized for installation in New York.
You can download NYSERDA’s New York State [PDF] and New York City [PDF] factsheets to learn more about energy storage regulations and safety in your community.
Technical Assistance
NYSERDA works with local governments including first responders one-on-one to better understand, plan for, and site energy storage systems. As needed, NYSERDA can draw upon a network of independent subject-matter experts who can work directly with local permitting agencies on specific questions or concerns.
