Siting for Large-Scale Renewables
Large-scale renewable generating facilities play a key role in achieving New York’s ambitious climate and energy goals under the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act. Unlike smaller facilities, which are permitted at the local level, major renewable generating facilities greater than or equal to 25 megawatts (MW) are required to seek approval through one of two comprehensive, State-level review processes:
Office of Renewable Energy Siting
New renewable energy projects greater than or equal to 25 MW will seek a permit through the Office of Renewable Energy Siting.
New renewable energy projects between 20-25 MW, as well as projects in the initial stages of Article 10, may opt-in to this process.
Article 10
Existing renewable energy projects in the Article 10 queue will continue to seek a permit through Article 10.
Non-renewable electric generating facilities greater than 25 MW will continue to seek a permit through Article 10.
