Example Training Projects
NYSERDA supports a variety of projects across the state providing training and experience to both new and existing workers in clean energy industries.
These initiatives are designed to ensure that New York energy efficiency and clean technology businesses have an adequate supply of new and existing workers with the necessary occupational skills, credentials, and experience to participate in the clean energy economy.
The example training projects highlighted below illustrate the variety of technology areas, the mix of training providers, and the types of training program formats funded through NYSERDA Workforce Development programs.

Energy Efficient Lighting Training | RPI | N/A | 906 | Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Lighting Research Center created a training program for new and existing employees of energy-efficient lighting manufacturers and installation/specification companies. Instructional content was developed under this project that was made available to community colleges and similar entities to advance technical training programs in lighting manufacturing and in the lighting specification and installation profession. As the students moved through the course, they had the opportunity to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and prepare for lighting certifications offered by the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP), which created a clear pathway to the lighting profession. |
HVAC and Building Management Systems (BMS) Training | 32BJ Training Fund | Certus Controls | 185 | Local 32BJ, the nation's largest building service workers union, partnered with Certus Controls to design and deliver comprehensive training on Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Building Management Systems (BMS) to union members, many of which reside and/or work in environmental justice communities in New York City. This 11-week course was available in both English and Spanish, supporting the development of a sustainable pipeline of workers in the HVAC and building trades. |
Net Zero Carbon Training | Steven Winter Associates | SUNY New Paltz | 538 | Steven Winter Associates partnered with a consortium of 24 private, public, and educational organizations to develop a suite of net zero carbon trainings for both new and retrofit projects based on Passive House principles. The training was made available to State University of New York (SUNY) faculty, students, staff and any partners involved in enhancing the operation, retrofit and construction of ultra-high-performance buildings. The training was a direct response to the state's Executive Order 88 directing state agencies and authorities to improve the energy efficiency of state buildings and meet SUNY's high-performance goals for zero net carbon construction. |

Green Jobs Training Program | Sustainable South Bronx (The HOPE Program) | Green Jobs Training Center | 63 | Sustainable South Bronx partnered with the Green Jobs Training Center to deliver comprehensive training to prepare residents of disadvantaged communities for careers in the green energy and infrastructure field. The 12-week, full-time program covered a wide range of green building topics and prepared trainees for positions in the green infrastructure and maintenance, clean technologies, and energy efficiency sectors. In addition to developing environmental literacy, students gained valuable skills in energy efficiency retrofitting, solar power installation, landscaping, energy auditing, and more. Industry-recognized certifications were a key part of the curriculum, providing trainees with the most relevant and current knowledge, and a competitive advantage to their job search. |
High-Performance Building Training | North American Passive House Network | Building Energy Exchange, Passive House Network | 5689 | North American Passive House Network (NAPHN) partnered with the Building Energy Exchange and Passive House Academy to train technical professionals on high-performance buildings. NAPHN built on its successful Passive House training to create a pipeline of training from introductory courses ("primers") to intensive professional certifications recognized worldwide. |
Architectural Retrofit Training | CUNY Building Performance Lab | Manhattan Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIANY) | 368 | The City University of New York (CUNY) Building Performance Lab is partnering with the American Institute of Architects, New York Chapter (AIANY) to develop a course in the architectural aspects of retrofits to address the need for retrofitting resulting from New York City's emissions reduction mandate. The 10.5-hour course is geared towards existing and emerging architects, engineers and energy consultants, including immigrants and people of color, who design and specify the architectural aspects of retrofits. Participants have the opportunity to earn architectural and engineering continuing education credits, eventually leading to a certification in combination with similar trainings offered through CUNY's industry partners. |
Green Jobs Training Program | New York State Weatherization Directors Association (NYSWDA) | Workforce Development Board of Herkimer, Madison, and Oneida Counties and Mohawk Valley Workforce Development Board | 312 | New York State Weatherization Directors Association (NYSWDA) partnered with the Mohawk Valley Workforce Development Board on a new energy efficiency training for low-income and environmental justice populations in the City of Utica. The training led to Building Performance Institute certifications and continuing education units for energy auditors, quality control inspectors, HVAC technicians, entry-level crew people and on-site crew leaders, providing new and existing workers with opportunities for upskilling and advancement in the energy efficiency industry. |
Energy Efficient Training Pipeline | Hudson Valley Community College | N/A | 292 | Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) created a comprehensive energy efficiency training pipeline for underemployed and low-income individuals that encompasses soft skills as well as job-related, on-the-job training, and college coursework, enabling opportunities for advancement in the building trades and energy efficiency-related careers. HVCC developed a series of short trainings for underserved adults leading to new certificates and industry-driven micro-credentials along with an "energy efficiency workforce tool box" of additional certifications to meet market demand. Additionally, HVCC expanded its existing, credit-bearing coursework to address the need for critical mid-level skill development in advanced building materials, building envelop sealing, and energy efficiency heating, cooling, and building control systems. Industry partners offered experiential learning opportunities, including job "immersion" experiences, internships, and mentoring, for students at all levels, with opportunities for job placement upon training completion. |
Building Operators Training Program | Youth Action Program and Homes | CUNY Building Performance Lab, Association for Energy Affordability | 36 | Youth Action Programs and Homes, Inc. created a Building Operators Training Program to prepare disengaged youth in Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx for entry-level jobs with local multi-family building operators and small businesses. The 72-hour training included both classroom and hands-on learning from the CUNY Building Performance Lab and culminated in a certificate of completion along with an 6-8-week internship in various building sites. Throughout the program, Youth Action supported participants with professional development programming, worksite coaching, case management, job placement as well as education assistance. Interested participants had the opportunity to further their skills in a 40-hour Building Energy Efficiency Building Operations Specialist training, resulting in a nationally recognized credential. |
iManifold HVAC Training - "Training Super HVAC Technicians Armed with Skills & Equipment to Save Energy" | North Park Innovation Group | Multiple partners | 460 | North Park Innovations Group expanded its product line of HVAC training systems to address the gap in skilled HVAC technicians in New York State. The project included the development of an online iManifold Technician Certification course to train workers on the iManifold digital measurement and diagnostic system, resulting in a new certification. Additionally, North Park developed an accompanying Artificial Intelligence engine, led by SUNY University at Buffalo, to enable predictive maintenance of HVAC equipment and allow less-seasoned technicians to perform expert-level installation, commissioning, service and repairs. Finally, North Park trained HVAC commercial technicians on the iManifold Pulse, a brand-new monitoring and diagnostic platform for HVAC equipment, focused on roof-top-unit air-source heat pumps. The training created a pipeline of skilled HVAC workers trained on the latest high-tech platform for the clean energy economy. |
Energy Auditor Training | Willdan | Euclid Training; Sustainable United Neighborhoods; Energy Economic Development Corporation | 124 | Willdan Energy Solutions, in partnership with Euclid Training, Sustainable United Neighborhoods, and the Energy Economic Development Corporation, sought to bridge the skills gap among incumbent energy auditors and attract new workers to the residential and small commercial market. The training fostered skill development in underserved and environmental justice communities and supported human capital needs to meet new city and state regulations. By addressing new ConEdison utility program requirements, the training ensured that energy auditors in the field have the foundational knowledge and enhanced technical understanding required for various building systems (lighting, environmental, envelopes). Program graduates were eligible for continuing education units as well as nationally recognized certifications. |
Green Jobs Initiative | DC 37 AFSCME, AFL-CIO | Association for Energy Affordability, Energy Economic Development Corporation | 119 | The District Council 37 Education Fund (DC 37), the largest public employees union in New York City (NYC), developed a Green Jobs Initiative to enhance the skills of nearly four dozen occupations in the green jobs economy. DC 37's curriculum offered fundamentals and advanced study, each offering the opportunity for continuing education units and professionally recognized credentials that lead to career paths and advancement in multiple sectors, including renewable energy, green technology, building sciences, and environmental conservation and engineering. |
Clean Tech Pre-Apprenticeship Program | SUNY Ulster | YouthBuild of Ulster Co., Citizens for Local Power | 572 | SUNY Ulster is partnering with a number of community stakeholders in Ulster County and the City of Kingston to expand the pre-apprenticeship programs for the clean technology fields in the region. Under the project, YouthBuild and Ulster County Sheriff's office are recruiting high-risk youth and incarcerated individuals to participate in a green jobs training on building envelope, heating, cooling and automation systems, photovoltaics and passive solar technology. The courses lay the foundation for stackable micro-credentials that students can earn on their path towards an Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) in Clean Technology degree, or layer with degrees outside of the Clean Tech field. In addition to wrap-around services provided by the Ulster County Office of Employment and Training, trainees have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in green building techniques and repairs through the Kingston Land Bank. Graduates are eligible for continuing education credits as well as Building Performance Institute and Passive House certifications leading into job placement with local contractors. |
Energy Storage and Microgrid (ESM) Training | IBEW (NYS Labor Management Cooperation Committee) | N/A | 129 | The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee developed an Energy Storage and Microgrid training and certification. Specifically, the course prepared electrical contractors and electricians for the safe and effective assembly, testing, commissioning, maintenance, repair, retrofitting and decommissioning of Energy Storage and Microgrid systems. They integrated the training into the IBEW apprenticeship curriculum, elevating the specialty skills and knowledge required to safely work on energy storage and microgrid projects and ensure a continued supply of trained electrical workers. |
Advanced Building Automation Systems (BAS) Training | Steven Winter Associates | Sentient Buildings | 27 | Steven Winter Associates partnered with Sentient Buildings to develop a comprehensive training program designed to upskill existing HVAC contractors and broaden their experience with the design, installation, and commissioning requirements of Building Automation Systems (BAS) systems. The training program served mechanical and plumbing contractors looking to acquire new skills in advanced building technologies and helped to further attract a new generation of technology-savvy, environmentally-minded workers to the field. |
Energy Storage Systems Training | City Tech | N/A | 43 | New York City College of Technology (City Tech) and its partners developed a training program to expand the capacity of its tuition-based course offerings and address the need for energy storage installers in New York State. Under the project, City Tech recruited and trained low-income workers, including veterans and individuals residing in environmental justice communities, in two cohorts. New workers were introduced to energy storage systems, and existing workers learned about advanced energy storage/microgrids with distributed energy resources. Graduates were eligible for academic credits towards the college's engineering baccalaureate degrees and advancement in clean energy careers. |
Building Automation Systems (BAS) Training | Stacks + Joules, Inc. | Urban Assembly Maker Academy (UA Maker), South Bronx Community Charter High School, Lower Eastside Girls Club, Here to Here & Bronx Private Industry Council, Tauris Tech, and Tridium | 121 | Stacks + Joules partnered with UA Maker Academy, South Bronx Community Charter High School, and the Lower East Side Girls Club, to prepare high school seniors from low-income communities and designated environmental justice areas for jobs in the Building Automation System (BAS) industry. Under the project, Stacks + Joules taught a cohort of students in computer programming, wireless networking, HVAC and lighting controls, and automated building control systems. In addition to rigorous technical training, career exploration, hands-on learning, and close mentorship by industry professionals, the program lead to professional credentials, that prepared students for careers in the energy efficiency and clean technology industry. |
Energy Service Learning Pre-apprenticeship Program | Green City Force | New York City Housing Authority | 109 | Green City Force (GCF) is delivering an " Energy Service-Learning Pre-pre-apprenticeship," creating the essential first step for un- or underemployed young adults to enter a clean energy career pathway. The program trains graduates from GCF's AmeriCorps program, recruited in partnership with the New York City Housing Authority, on electric lighting and post-construction appliances, solar panel maintenance and energy monitoring, preparing them for work on residential energy efficiency retrofits serving low-to-moderate income families. Graduates leave the training with a firm foundation in environmental literacy, professional certifications, and meaningful hands-on experience. GCF's overall goal is to develop a comprehensive model from service (pre-pre-apprenticeship phase) to Energy Boot Camp (pre-apprenticeship phase) to employment or actual union apprenticeship in the sustainable buildings sector. |
Bed Stuy Green Buildings Operations and Maintenance Training | CEC - Solar One | Bed Stuy Restoration | 65 | Solar One is partnering with Bed Stuy Restoration, a nonprofit in Brooklyn, NY, to deliver training on energy efficient building operations and maintenance procedures to young adults (ages 18-24) from underserved communities. Upon completing this 4-week training program, students have the opportunity to earn site safety training cards as well as EPA Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting and Green Professional (GPRO) Operations + Maintenance (O+M) certifications. Strategic industry partnerships ensure that students are positioned for direct entry into building maintenance and operations jobs in the multifamily residential building sector. |
Green Collar Prep | Non Traditional Employment for Women (NEW) | Solar One | 75 | Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) is delivering a new training program to prepare low-income women, particularly women of color, for jobs and apprenticeships in the "green collar" economy. Offered free of charge to participants, "Green Collar Prep" (GCP) builds on the foundational skills acquired in NEW's core apprenticeship program, Blue Collar Prep and NEW at Night, by integrating content directly linked to sustainability and efficiency practices and providing students with comprehensive training in environmental literacy and construction techniques. This program is a hands-on course that encompasses skills training, soft skills workshops, physical conditioning, mentoring and networking opportunities with subject matter experts, and site tours that focus on environmental stewardship in the construction industry. It provides students with connections to necessary training certifications as well as employment opportunities with apprenticeship partners and contractors, ensuring that women are equally represented in the sustainable construction industry. |
Energy Storage Technology Workforce Training Program | SUNY Poly | N/A | 75 | SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) is delivering a training program to increase the number of engineers, scientists, and technicians in the energy storage and clean energy industry. In collaboration with industry partners, SUNY Poly is educating high school graduates, college students, and current un- or underemployed, low-income workers on all aspects of rechargeable batteries, including assembly, testing, post-mortem analysis, and recycling, and provide hands-on experience through lab training and internships in the energy storage and clean energy industry. The training offers a new certificate program for recent high school graduates and supplements SUNY Poly's existing senior capstone project requirement leading to a Clean Energy Concentration certificate. |
Small- and Medium Business (SMB) Energy Efficiency (EE) Training | Willdan Lighting & Electrical, Inc. | Energy Economic Development Corporation, Green Tech Leaders, Soulful Synergy, NY Institute for Technology | 140 | Willdan Energy Solutions delivered an energy efficiency training focusing on thermal systems in the small- and medium-business sector to address the need for skilled professionals in utility companies' energy efficiency programs serving this sector. The training served new and existing clean energy professionals, including individuals from priority populations, and encompassed coursework on the green economy, thermal building systems, advanced software benchmarking and energy modeling. Depending on the trainee skills and backgrounds, the program was able to be adapted as an industry-specific bridge to additional training or lead to accreditation through the New York Institute of Technology's Energy Management Program. |
Air-to-Water Heat Pump (AWHP) Training | Steven Winter Associates | Sanden | 64 | Steven Winter Associates (SWA) is partnering with Sanden, a manufacturer of a CO2-based Air-to-Water Heat Pumps (AWHPs), to train contractors on AWHP retrofits for domestic hot water systems in multi-family buildings. The technology offers a non-invasive upgrade to existing boiler rooms to reduce on-site emissions. The training targets both existing mechanical and plumbing contractors as well as new workers. |
Advanced Lighting Controls Training | IBEW (NYS Labor Management Cooperation Committee) | N/A | 152 | This training addressed the need for an updated apprentice/journeyman electrician course in the area of advanced lighting controls offered by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). The proposal included equipment purchases as well as new curriculum, which included wireless controls among other updated technologies. The 16-hour training was comprised of lectures and hands-on experiences and was offered to IBEW members as part of IBEW's registered electrical apprenticeship program at training centers statewide. |
GPRO Construction Management | Urban Green Council | N/A | 395 | Urban Green seeks is delivering training to upskill existing workers on its Green Professionals Building Skill (GPRO) Construction Management (CM) program. The training provides construction teams with the practical knowledge and skills needed to create energy-efficient, sustainable buildings while minimizing incremental costs. GPRO CM is a certificate program that focuses on Integrated Project Delivery to integrate green practices into trainees' core knowledge so they understand how to integrate energy efficiency into their work. The training consists of a 7-hour course, 3 hours of training from online elective modules, and an exam leading to the GPRO CM certificate. |

Whole Building Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology Construction Training | Andromeda Community Initiative | Solar One, Andromeda Academy of Construction Trades | 68 | Andromeda Community Initiative (ACI) is taking a “Whole Building Approach” to train and certify persons in need seeking to become entry-level construction workers with skills and understanding in energy efficient building operations and maintenance, green weatherization and restoration, and carbon emissions reduction. ACI’s seven-week offering, which provides DOB certifications, GPRO certifications and certifications in green building operations and maintenance, exposes individuals to green building work both within buildings as well as on their envelope. Learned skills cover aspects of both restoration, efficiency and new construction. ACI works to place graduates in entry-level construction and building operations and maintenance jobs throughout NYC, particularly targeting those employers relevant to energy efficiency, weatherization, and overall carbon reduction. |

Students and professionals can prepare themselves for nationally recognized certifications such as BPI, AEE, ASHRAE, and resulting in CEUs. Training is delivered synchronously and asynchronously online to NYIT students, professionals, and individuals from priority populations, followed by hands-on training, career support and job placement assistance. |
Advanced HVAC-R & Clean Heat Program Training | Westchester Community Opportunity Program (WestCOP) | Willdan Clean Energy Academy | 125 | Westchester Community Opportunity Program, Inc. (WestCOP) is providing job training and placement service that addresses the needs in the Clean Heat market for entry and junior front-end workers. The training is specifically geared toward advanced HVAC and cold climate heat pump technologies, application, and incentive program navigation. The training is industry-aligned and tailored to five career pathways: sales & outreach, auditing and analysis, project coordination & management, design and engineering and inspection. |
Building a Green Collar Workforce | Ulster County BOCES | N/A | 126 | Ulster County BOCES is preparing high school students for green careers as HVAC Technicians and Electricians through classroom technical and soft skills instruction and a variety of Work-Based Learning opportunities, including internships. HVAC and Heat Pump Training | Isaac Training & Education Center (ITEC) | N/A | 132 | Isaac Training & Education Center has updated its course offerings to include curricula that are solely focused on high-efficient and clean technology training and is delivering these updated trainings. ITEC increased the size of its Mini-Split Lab and built out a Geothermal Lab to ensure all participants are able to translate what is learned in the class into real life, hands-on training in the lab. The training is geared toward HVAC technicians who are already in the field. |
Community Climate Leadership Project | SUNY Research Foundation on behalf of University at Buffalo | PUSH Buffalo | 60 | The University at Buffalo (UB) School of Architecture and Planning and People United for Sustainable Housing (PUSH Buffalo) is delivering a cooperative training program. The joint curriculum, offered at the UB South Campus and the PUSH Sustainability Workforce Training Center, provides energy efficiency and clean technology training to graduate students, residents of disadvantaged communities, and priority populations. This innovative, experiential learning model prepares trainees for decent, stable, and living-wage employment and provides energy efficiency and clean technology training. Advanced Building Controls & Electrical Upskilling for SUNY Facilities and Energy Professionals | IREC, Inc. | Slipstream | 278 | IREC and its partner Slipstream are delivering an advanced building controls technologies and building electrification training program designed to increase the performance of higher education facilities by upskilling energy managers, plant utility engineers, and facilities directors. The program was launched in partnership with the State University of New York University at Albany and the State University of New York System Administration, representing all 64 SUNY campuses across the state. IREC and Slipstream developed educational modules geared to both existing and new workers in a highly interactive hybrid training program to help integrate knowledge of new technologies into daily operations. |
Better Buildings: High Performance & Climate-Resilient Design | Building Energy Exchange (BE-Ex) | Transfuture, MightCould | 555 | BE-Ex is delivering virtual and in-person training on high performance and climate resilient building principles and implementation strategies for multifamily buildings, as well as New York City and State climate legislation and code requirements. The training enables these professionals to fulfill training requirements to access critical project financing through the New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development. |
Green Jobs Training Program Expansion | District Council 37 Education Fund | Energy EDC | 375 | DC37 is expanding its Green Jobs Training Program, serving low-income members from Environmental Justice Zones throughout New York City. Training is focusing on energy efficiency & clean technologies such as building automation and controls, energy efficient appliances and “smart” controls, environmental systems, energy efficient building systems, lighting upgrades and controls, green building rating through LEED certification, and green analyst training in benchmarking and carbon accounting. This training supports opportunities for DC37 members to advance in their careers and obtain wage growth regardless of their current occupation. |
Preparing Students for Clean Energy Careers | Capital Region BOCES | N/A | 54 | Capital Region BOCES is updating its Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) training for high school students to ensure that program graduates have the skills demanded by employers in the Energy Efficiency and Clean Technology industry.
