Reasons to Voluntarily Purchase Tier 1 RECs
Voluntary Tier 1 RECs are a flexible and accessible option for organizations to reduce their carbon footprint and support renewable energy development in New York State. This approach will provide direct benefits to achieving the goals of the Community Leadership and Community Protection Act. Purchasing voluntary Tier 1 RECs from NYSERDA comes with several benefits.
- Buy with confidence and trust: NYSERDA is the largest purchaser of Tier 1 RECs, which are bought from New York-based generators and help achieve the State’s clean energy goals. NYSERDA purchases Tier 1 RECs from developers through a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process.
- Technology neutral: NYSERDA supports a diverse supply of clean energy, including wind, solar, and hydropower generation, through its Tier 1 RFP procurement.
- Support and claim additionality: All Tier 1 renewable energy projects have come online since January 1, 2015. Purchasers of Tier 1 RECs can immediately claim the environmental benefit of the Tier 1 RECs from currently operating projects.
What’s a Tier 1 REC?
Tier 1 RECs are the environmental attributes derived from the energy production of one megawatt-hour (MWh) by Renewable Energy Standard (RES)-eligible electric generation sources. These resources first entered commercial operation on or after January 1, 2015. One Tier 1 REC represents the energy production of one MWh. The initial Clean Energy Standard order, accessible on the CES homepage, identified RES-eligible resources and other requirements.
