Federal Update: Request for Information on Medium- and Heavy-Duty Charging Infrastructure Needs
On September 12, the Federal Highway Administration and Joint Office of Energy and Transportation issued a request for information (RFI) seeking public comments regarding medium- and heavy-duty (MHD) electric charging technologies and infrastructure needs . Specifically, the RFI is seeking input on unique EV charger and station needs, vehicle charging patterns, MHD EV charger technology and standardization, and workforce, supply chain, and manufacturing to support charging of MHD battery EVs. Comments were due by November 12.
Funding Updates: New Funding Available for MHD Charging and Electric School Buses
- On September 26, the U.S. EPA announced $965 million in funding for electric school buses through the Clean School Bus Rebate Program . Funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, this initiative aims to replace polluting diesel buses with electric ones, improving students' health and reducing costs for schools. To date, the program has awarded nearly $3 billion to fund approximately 8,700 buses. The EC has a variety of resources to help school districts apply for this critical funding and looks forward to working with communities across the country to deploy more electric buses. - The Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office issued the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for its SuperTruck Charge funding program . The program will award $72 million for two to three projects that demonstrate innovative charging infrastructure for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles near ports and distribution hubs and along major corridors. A mandatory concept paper was due on October 8, and the deadline for full applications is November 20.
Additional EVSE Funding Opportunities
EV Make-Ready Programs
The Joint Utilities of New York offer an incentive up to 100% of electric infrastructure costs associated with non-residential Level 2 or DCFC EV charging stations, encouraging the development of electric infrastructure to match the deployment of EVs while reducing upfront costs.
