Energy Action Plan

Establish goals and a road map to continuously measure and improve your energy performance and operations

How it works

Set Goals.

An energy action plan is your road map to improving energy performance. The first step is to establish short- and long-term goals. Using data from an energy performance assessment, you will have an informed idea of where potential opportunities for improvement exist. Establish goals that are clear, measurable, and realistic, and that have specific target dates. Goals can be organization-wide, at the facility or building level, or specific to equipment.

Identify Success Measures.

For each goal, determine how you will measure success and establish key performance indicators. These indicators should be measured regularly and will help demonstrate your progress toward meeting each goal. Communicate and recognize your progress and successes both internally and externally to drive motivation and engagement.

Identify Energy Saving Opportunities.

Determine opportunities and projects to support your goals. Opportunities can include sourcing clean energy to power your business, upgrading equipment and systems, training staff on energy-saving measures, and capitalizing on emerging technologies. Prioritize opportunities that are anticipated to have a high impact on your business and are relatively easy to implement. Each opportunity should have an associated timeline, key milestones, and expected outcomes.

Determine Roles and Reporting.

Specify key stakeholders responsible for implementing and monitoring each energy saving opportunity. If stakeholders are from different parts of the organization, consider establishing cross-functional working teams. Develop a formal reporting process to help teams regularly document and share their progress.

How you benefit

  • Create a clear road map to improving your energy performance
  • Set data-driven, measurable goals that are achievable and timely
  • Define employee roles and responsibilities for all energy saving opportunities

When you should consider it

Creating an energy action plan may be good for your business if you are:

  • Identifying and prioritizing potential operational investments
  • Considering new and emerging energy technologies (e.g., renewables, real time monitoring technologies)
  • Measuring the success of current energy-saving practices
  • Acting on data gathered during an energy performance assessment
