  • Consent Decree
    New York and the federal government have long disputed both the extent of the responsibility of the federal government for site cleanup under the WVDP Act, as well as which government is liable for perpetual care of any remaining wastes after decontamination activities are complete. In December 2006, New York State, NYSERDA and DEC filed suit against the United States and DOE in federal court, seeking to resolve the relative responsibilities of the State and the federal government for the cost of remediating the Site.

  • Fuel Reprocessing History
    The nation’s only commercial spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant operated at the West Valley site from 1966 to 1972. Nuclear Fuel Services, Inc. operated the reprocessing facility that was constructed on New York State land. During that time, 640 metric tons of fuel from both federal government defense reactors and commercial power reactors were reprocessed at West Valley.
